ESL - English as a Second Language
Welcome to the ESL information page. The introduction of ESL into the curriculum is an exciting development for St Columba College. The primary purpose of the subject is to develop students' literacy skills.

These are the skills which are crucial to gaining maximum learning opportunities throughout the curriculum. By offering ESL the College seeks to further cater for the individual needs of its students.

Literacy competencies will not only equip students with the necessary skills for their schooling but are also crucial for their future study and employment opportunities.

Using ESL we encourage students to develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Through their ESL involvement students will have ample opportunity to be creative and responsible learners using our multi-function classroom.

Computers along with a wide variety of life skills teaching tools will be an important component of the ESL classroom.

In addition to regular scheduled classes the ESL classroom will be open during specific lunchtimes so that any student can access extra literacy support.

A great advantage of teaching students simple ESL strategies is that they will be able to utilise these literacy skills to become more confident learners in all subject study areas.
