St Columba College
is a combined Anglican and Catholic College, and is the first Ecumenical
Educational venture of this kind in Australia. The College is an
initiative of both the Anglican and Catholic Archbishops.
Intensive planning
for the College began in 1995 and continued throughout 1996. An
Anglican Catholic Schools Committee was established. This group
had the important task of initial planning, and preparations for
a 1997 opening.
The location
of the College is in Andrews Farm (Playford Council), an area which
has been developed by Hickinbotham Homes. Hickinbothams have been
most supportive of the College's development and that support is
appreciated. The local Playford Council is also supportive of the
College, and we seek to work with them in providing an excellent
community resource in the local area.
In June of 1996,
the first Principal, Ms Madeleine Brennan was appointed. From that
time an Interim Management Committee also began to coordinate work
at the 'local level'. The temporary office was established at 3
Chelmsford Grove, Andrews Farm; the uniform was established; enrolment
interviews carried out; College policies established and teachers
interviewed and appointed.
Building work
began on site on Monday 16 September 1996, a little later than anticipated,
but was back on schedule by the next week. Hickinbothams were the
builder for stage one of the development. Stage two began in 1997
and included a new resource centre, IT facilities, and extensions
to the staff and administration areas. In addition to this, work
was carried out in landscaping which by the end of 1998, completed
the northern courtyard area. In 1999 planning continued for our
middle school facilities, along with the oval being constructed
by the Playford Council.
In October of
1999 the College received notification from the government regarding
the success of our application for the College to extend into providing
secondary education.
A site approximately
200m from the Primary site was developed in 2000/2001 and students
began using the facilities of this first stage of our new development
in Term 2 of 2001.
In 2008 the College
has an enrolment of approximately 1300
students in R-12. We are committed to ensuring that students have access to the best
possible curriculum facilities and educational environment.
The College
community looks forward to the many joys and challenges of the years
ahead.
