St Columba College Primary School is a place where all students have access to quality teaching and learning programs. Within our Primary School, from Reception to Year Six, students are engaged in a vibrant educational program that supports them to develop excellent foundation skills in literacy, the building block of all learning. We value a strong partnership with families and welcome the building of relationships within a caring and safe community. Professionalism is evident in all facets of school life. We make no apology for expecting our students to be successful. We set high standards in all aspects of school life in an environment where students are happy and excited about their leaning. Practising good manners, wearing the College uniform with pride and academic success are all hallmarks of life at St Columba.
Knowing that students will be with us for all of their school years in our R-12 educational environment makes the transition between the Primary, Middle and Senior Schools seamless. We know our students and we are proud of them and their achievements.
Close relationship with God
Life is a journey. At the heart of making sense of life’s journey lies the challenge to provide students with an opportunity to reflect upon the meaning of life. An excellent education opens one’s mind to the wonders of the universe; the best possible up-to-date scientific knowledge and social data, all within a framework of knowing that God is at the centre of all things. We seek to help students know about the person of Jesus through our Anglican and Catholic traditions. We want our students to know our Christian story and to experience what it means to live within a Christian community, our College community. Prayer and liturgical celebrations are a vibrant part of our College community. We want our students to think about what they believe, what gives their life meaning and purpose. We want our students to make life decisions from an ethical foundation and we want to work in partnership with parents in this crucial element of educating our next generation of adults and community leaders. Jesus and the Christian message lies at the heart of our Anglican and Catholic community, underpinning our commitment to ensuring the best possible learning environment for each and every student.
Passion for living
Great importance is placed on developing children’s self esteem and confidence as well as their academic abilities. We aim to develop each student’s God-given potential to its fullest capacity by providing stimulating and challenging experiences within a supportive Christian environment. We strongly encourage the pursuit of excellence, inviting students to grow in responsibility and freedom. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and actions within an environment where they know they are valued and feel safe to take risks. We are committed to developing in students, an open and critical attitude to the world today; young people who are able and prepared to take their place as responsible global citizens who have been called by God to be all they can for the well-being of human kind. Wonderful opportunities exist for students to experience leadership programs, engage in drama, music and physical education. We want our students to be engaged in their learning in a happy, productive and energetic manner, which they will take into their middle and senior years at the College.
Love of learning
As humans we are engaged in learning all of our lives. Each and every situation provides for us an opportunity to develop our skills and knowledge. School provides an important experience of learning for all young people. We want our students to love learning, to see that learning opens new doors for understanding ourselves, others and the world around us. Therefore, developing a love of learning in our students is foundational to all that we do. We endeavour to provide a safe, supportive and challenging learning environment as well as experiences which respond to the needs of the young people in our care in a contemporary society.
We support and teach the Australian Curriculum. The Key Learning areas provide our students with a broad range of knowledge, skills and dispositions that will prepare them for being part of a vibrant society in which they will live and work. These are:
- Religious Education, Literacy, Numeracy, Society and Environment, Science, Design Technology, Health and Physical Education, The Arts and Languages.
- Information and Communication Technologies are embedded into all learning areas.
- Specialist teachers are in the areas of: Music, Indonesian and ICT
We strongly believe in the importance of providing a teaching and learning environment that assists in preparing today’s children for the future. We know that technology is playing an increasing role in accessing the learning environment and so we seek to provide a primary school curriculum which is rich in opportunities for students to engage with technology as well as many traditional models of teaching and learning.
