Tapped In - St Columba Water Grant
St Columba College has been the successful recipient of a $36,000 Community Water Grant.
The Australian Government Community Grants are part of the $2b Australian Water Fund. It provides grants of up to $50,000 for community organisations to put in place practical on-the-ground solutions to either help save, re-use or improve the health of the local water sources.
St Columba has been able to use the grant to install water-saving devices in the College's Primary School. In particular the following devices have been installed:
Water-efficient toilet pans and cisterns that use 50% less water
- Push-button water-restricting taps that work on a time basis
- Pressure-limiting valves
These innovations are expected to save approximately 950,000 litres of water - the equivalent of the water contained in twenty ten-metre domestic swimming pools!
As the College Principal, Ms Madeleine Brennan, remarked:
"The Community Water Grants encourage better use and improvements in water use and water quality through practical on-the-ground projects. The water-saving devices utilised in the Primary School will go a long way in ensuring that St Columba saves a serious amount of water for the community."
Originally the older-style large pans/cisterns and manual taps were a tremendous drain on the College's water usage. With the support of the Community Water Grants, the new facilities have changed for the better with substantial water savings. |
